Loong Choo Kung Fu Society
Lenah Valley, Hobart, Tasmania
About
Hobart's oldest Chinese martial arts school, the Loong Choo Kung Fu Society was founded by Master Johnny Koay in 1974, teaching the rare Loong Choo (Dragon and Pearl) style — a southern soft/hard system with roots in Malaysian Chinese martial arts tradition. The school carries lion dance as part of its traditional curriculum, though public lion dance performance activity is not currently visible. Current head instructor Darren Jones took over from founder Johnny Koay around 2006. The school trains at Lenah Valley Hall and is a recognised member of Kung Fu Wushu Tasmania. Johnny Koay was inducted into the Australian Martial Arts Hall of Fame in 2013.
