Gold Coast Lion Dancing is the performance arm of the Mantis Kung Fu Academy, established in 1989 by Sifu Matthew Hansen and recognised as the Gold Coast's longest-running Traditional Chinese Lion Dance and Kung Fu team. Rooted in the Chow Gar Southern Praying Mantis tradition, the team fields over 20 lions of varied colours and sizes, two 5-metre dragons, LED lions for night events, and electric firecrackers. The academy covers South East Queensland and Northern NSW, with an official branch — Blue Dragon Lion Dance — extending coverage to the Scenic Rim region around Beaudesert. Sifu Hansen trained to Master level in 1998 and furthered his Chow Gar Mantis training directly in Hong Kong in 2017–2018.
