Chung Wah Dragon & Lion Dance Troupe
Northbridge, Perth, Western Australia
About
One of Perth's oldest and most internationally decorated lion dance troupes, tracing its roots to a group of Chinese engineering students from Christmas Island who formed the WA Lion Dance Troupe in the late 1960s. The troupe was formally adopted by the Chung Wah Association in 1984 and expanded to include dragon dance in 1988. They developed a unique blended house style combining Fut San and Hok San techniques and achieved world-top-5 rankings in international competition in the 1990s. After a period of disbandment around 2012, the troupe was revived with a youth and community focus — uniquely, no kung fu or martial arts background is required to join. The troupe now serves as the Australian National Headquarters of Kun Seng Keng and remains one of Perth's most active performing troupes.
