About

The Chung Wah Society Dragon & Lion Dance Troupe is almost certainly the only active lion dance troupe in the Northern Territory, and one of Australia's most historically significant. The tradition of lion dance in Darwin traces directly to the establishment of the Chinese Temple in 1887 — more than 135 years of unbroken community practice, predating even the formal Chung Wah Society (est. 1946). The first Chinese settlers arrived in Darwin in 1874 from Guangdong Province, the heartland of Southern lion dance, and brought the tradition with them. Today the troupe operates across three tiers — Senior, Intermediate, and Junior (ages 4–10) — and trains every Saturday at the Chung Wah Hall. During Chinese New Year the troupe performs over 400 business and home blessings across Darwin, extending as far as Alice Springs, making it one of the highest-volume performing troupes in the country by sheer number of blessings. The troupe is open to all backgrounds and actively welcomes non-Chinese heritage members. Each blessing begins at the Chinese Temple on Woods Street, where the lion receives its good spirits before proceeding to bless homes and businesses throughout the city.
