Lion Dance Australia

Christmas Island Kung Fu Association (Lion Dance Troupe)

Flying Fish Cove / Poon Saan, Christmas Island, Christmas Island

About

The Christmas Island Kung Fu Association organises lion dance for the island's Chinese community, whose lion dance tradition is long-established — brought by Malaysian Chinese workers who arrived from the 1970s to work at the phosphate mine. The community is predominantly of Malaysian Chinese background, with roots in Hakka, Cantonese and Hokkien communities from peninsular Malaysia and Singapore. The island's lion dance tradition is Malaysian in character, closer to Malaysian Southern style than mainland Chinese or Hong Kong style. The association collaborates with the Chinese Mansion and Poon Saan Club on Chinese New Year events annually.
